Abstract
Objective: To identify the anatomical characteristics of the temporal branches of the facial nerve in the extraparotid gland in adult Vietnamese peoples. Subject and method: 12 hemi-faces (right: 7; left: 5) of Vietnamese cadavers (average age: 73.00 ± 13.39: 52 - 88 years; 8 men and 4 women). Research method: A cross-sectional description with analysis. Result and conclusion: The temporal branch of the facial nerve lies on the undersurface of the temporoparietal fascia-SMAS layer (100%). The average number of the temporal branches of the facial nerve escaping from the upper margin of the parotid gland was 2.50 ± 0.67 branches (2 - 4 branches), there was no difference between the right and the left side (p>0.05). In the extraparotid gland, the length of the first temporal branch of the facial nerve was 33.84 ± 6.69mm; second temporal branch was 32.08 ± 6.12mm and third temporal branch was 30.71 ± 7.08mm. The distance from the lateral orbital rim to the temporal branch of the facial nerve on the line (d) of the first temporal branch was 53.91 ± 6.45mm; second temporal branch was 58.16 ± 6.56mm and third temporal branch was 58.79 ± 5.50mm. The distance from the temporal branch escapes from the upper margin of the parotid gland (M) to the (d) line [passing the lateral orbital rim and root of the helix of the ear] and the (d2) line [passing the lateral orbital rim and tragation on the outer ear] were 28.48 ± 8.18mm and 14.97 ± 5.10mm.
