Abstract

Objective: To determine the rate of pain and analyze some clinical characteristics of pain in inpatient patients at the Department of Neurology - 103 Military Hospital. Subject and method: 500 patients treated at the Department of Neurology, from September 2018 to April 2019, the patient was diagnosed by the disease code, was able to complete the interview questions and agreed to participate in the study. All patients’ information were collected according to a uniform medical record of general characteristics; characteristics of pain types, location, intensity, nature and etiology. Result: The proportion of male patients with pain/female was 1.09/1. The rate of inpatient individuals suffering from pain in the Department of Neurology was 34.01%. Acute and chronic pain accounted for 50.8% and 49.2%, respectively; neuropathic pain accounted for the highest rate with 34.8%, nociceptive and mixture pain accounted for the lower proportion with 31.2% and 32%; pain in the back, hip and lower limbs (50.8%), headache (34.8%); patients with moderate, severe and very severe pain accounted for 36.6%, 41.2% and 8.4%, respectively; mean pain intensity score on Numerical Rating Scale of 6.66 ± 1.8; hyperneuralgia was seen in 38.2% of patients. The common pain character in patients was dull pain (43.5%) and sharp pain (29.6%). Conclusion: Patients with pain accounted for about one third (34.01%) of the total number of inpatient individuals at the Department of Neurology - 103 Military Hospital. The rates of acute (50.8%) and chronic pain (49.2%) were nearly equal. Clinical characteristics with neuralgia, sensory pain, mixture pain (98%) with dull pain, sharp pain (73.1%); in the lumbar and leg areas (50.8%) and moderate to severe and very severe pain (86.2%) occupied mainly.
