Abstract

Objective: To compare the value of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment and the mini-mental state examination as screening tests for dementia in elderly patients. Subject and method: A cross-sectional study on 241 subjects over 60 years of age who were examined at the National Geriatrics Hospital. The study subjects were assessed on MoCA, MMSE tests and identified dementia according to DSM - IV - TR. Result: The average age of the study subjects was 69.5 ± 11.2 years, the female / male ratio was 1.51. The MoCA test had similar sensitivity to MMSE test and had the specificity less than MMSE test in dementia screening. The negative predictive value and the positive predictive value of MoCA were equivalent to MMSE. The MoCA score was significantly positively correlated with the MMSE score. Conclusion: The MoCA test is similar to MMSE test in dementia screening
