Abstract
Objective: To determine the prevalence of lactose malabsorption and initally evaluate SIBO condition. Subject and method: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 53 subjects including healthy volunteers and people presenting with lower gastrointestinal symptoms. We measured the concentration of hydrogen in participants’ breath after consuming 25grams of lactose. People suspected with SIBO were then performed the glucose breath test to confirm. Result: The prevalence of lactose malabsorption in all 53 subjects was 86.8%, this prevalence in the healthy group and symptomatic group was 86% and 91%, respectively (p>0.05). 41.5% of the subjects experienced symptoms during the test, including diarrhea (18.9%), bloating (17%), abdominal pain (11.3%), urge to defecate (9.4%), belching (5.7%), borborgymi (5.7%) and excessive flatulence (5.7%). One subject was diagnosed with SIBO by the glucose breath test. Conclusion: The prevalence of lactose malabsorption using the 25gram dose of lactose was 86.8%, this prevalence was higher in the symptomatic group but the difference was not statistically significant.
