Abstract

Objective: To assess the effect of phaco surgery on cataract patients with penetrating keratoplasty. Subject and method: 19 eyes of 19 patients with cataract after penetrating keratoplasty were undergone phaco surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in the Corneal and External Disease Department, National Institute of Ophthalmology from December 2013 to September 2014. Method: Uncontrolled clinical trial. Result: Before surgery, 17 eyes had visual acuity below 20/200 with astigmatism of 7.9 ± 1.0D. 16 eyes had clear corneas and 3 eyes with mild corneal scar. All eyes had cataract grade from 2 or above. Postoperative visual acuity was improved significantly with 72.22% of eyes had visual acuity over 20/200. Astigmatism was reduced significantly (p<0.05). One eye had graft rejection and 2 eyes had corneal edema after surgery. Conclusion: Phaco surgery is an effective procedure to treat cataract after penetrating keratoplasty. Visual acuity was improved and astigmatism was reduced significantly. Graft rejection rate was very low.
