Abstract

Objective: To assess the common carotid’s morphological (intima-media thickness, atherosclerosis plaque) and functional changes by vascular ultrasound in the patients with end-stage chronic renal failure. Subject and method: Measured common carotid’s intima-media thickness (IMT) in 71 patients with chronic renal failure, compared to that of control normal subjects. Result and conclusion: Right and left common carotid’s IMT in patients (1.16 ± 0.34 and 1.16 ± 0.35mm) were higher than that of control normal subjects (0.70 ± 0.09mm and 0.70 ± 0.08mm); p<0.001. Vs in right and left carotid were lower than that in control (67.22 ± 19.75cm/s; 68.78 ± 23.13cm/s) vs (80.71 ± 6.39cm/s; 80.03 ± 11.12cm/s); p<0.001. Vd in right and left carotid were  lower than that in control (16.81 ± 5.57cm/s; 18.59 ± 8.09cm/s) vs (26.52 ± 3.18cm/s; 28.14 ± 4.60cm/s); p<0.001. Resistance index (RI) in patients was higher than that in control: (0.75 ± 0.05 and 0.73 ± 0.05) vs (0.67 ± 0.03 and 0.65 ± 0.03); p<0.001. 26.8% chronic renal failure patients with atherosclerosis plaque at the right common carotid and 28.2% with plaque at the left one, vs 0% in control normal subjects.
