Evaluation of the initial outcome of treatment for pediatric patients with medulloblastoma at the Pediatric Department of 108 Central Military Hospital

Abstract
Objective: The objectives of this study were to describe the clinical features, laboratory tests as well as to evaluate the initial outcome of treatment for pediatric patients with medulloblastoma at the Pediatric Department, 108 Military Central Hospital. Subject and method: A retrospective, prospective and descriptive study on 8 patients who were under 16 years old, diagnosed medulloblastoma. Result: Medulloblastoma accounted for 29.7% of all brain tumors. Patients aged 4 to 9 years old. The ratio of male/female was 3 to 1. The most common symptoms were headache, vomiting, cerebellar syndrome, hemiparesis. The tumors had the dimension of 3 to 5 cm (62.5%), clear boundaries (87.5%), ventricular dilatation (75%). 7/8 (87,5%) patients were effectively treated with the combination of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy: After treatment, patients had no vomiting, no cerebellar syndrome, improved hemiparesis, they could walk without help. Conclusion: Medulloblastoma accounted for 29.6% of all brain tumors in children who were hospitalized in one year, with a high malignant degree. The prognosis of these patients is good if they are detected and treated early, without metastasis.
