Gingivitis status and associated factors among Mong ethnic primary schoolchildren in Lao Cai Province, Vietnam, 2025

Abstract

This study describes the gingivitis status and examines associated factors among Mong ethnic primary schoolchildren at San Sa Ho Primary School, Sa Pa town, Lao Cai province, in 2025. A cross-sectional design was applied to 251 children aged 7 - 11 years. Gingivitis was assessed using the Gingival Index (GI) of Löe and Silness, combined with interviews on oral health behaviors. The prevalence of gingivitis was 72.9%, predominantly mild and moderate. No significant difference was observed by sex, while the prevalence tended to increase with age. Not brushing teeth daily, lack of regular dental check-ups, and maternal education below lower secondary level were significantly associated with gingivitis (p<0.05). These findings indicate that gingivitis remains a common oral health problem among Mong ethnic primary schoolchildren in a mountainous school setting and highlight the need for school-based preventive oral health interventions tailored to local conditions.
