Follicular dendritic sarcoma: A case report at Hanoi Oncology Hospital and literature review

Abstract
Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma is a sarcoma of follicular dendritic cells. This is a rare low-grade sarcoma that mostly occurs in extranodal sites (58% of cases); lymph nodes (31%) and both nodal and extranodal disease (10%). In this paper, we report a case of a 51-year-old male who was admitted to the hospital because of right cervical lymph nodes. Ultrasound results showed a right upper jugular lymph node with a diameter of 3.1cm, regular borders, loss of sinus structure. The histopathological images revealed the presence of tumor cells with round or oval nuclei, few mitosis, eosinophilic cytoplasm; which arranged in sheet, solid and were separated by fibrous connective tissues. Immunohistochemical staining showed that tumor cells were positive with CD21, CD23; negative with CK, S100, HMB45, MelanA, CD68, CD163, p63. The pathologic diagnosis was follicular dendritic cell sarcoma. Treatment: The patient underwent surgery to remove the tumor. The patient was stable and discharged from the hospital one week after the surgery and no recurrence or metastasis were detected in the re-examination after two months. Conclusion: FDCS is a rare tumor with many different histopathological patterns, so it can be confused with other types of tumor; therefore, immunochemistry evaluation plays an overall role in diagnosis.
