Abstract
Objective: To investigate the characteristics of prescribing of outpatients at Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital. Subject and method: A retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study of 415 outpatient prescriptions conveniently obtained within two months (November to December, 2022). Result: Of the 415 analyzed prescriptions, 35.2% were patients ≥ 65 years old, the most common diagnosis was dyslipidemia (58.3%), the proportion of prescriptions in the general internal medicine department was the most (32.8%). 5.5% of patients were assigned to have X-ray, 5.1% were assigned to test for a complete blood count, 5.8% had liver enzyme tests. The average number of drugs per prescription was 4.2 ± 2.0. The most commonly prescribed drug group was cardiovascular drugs (31.0%). 6.0% of prescriptions prescribed antibiotics. There were 5.5% prescriptions for parenteral drugs. Prescription for generic drugs accounted for 92.3%. Essential drugs accounted for 23.4%. Drug-drug interactions accounted for 51.8% with major, moderate, and mild severity at 2.5%, 84.7% and 12.8%, respectively. Conclusion: The rate of prescribing of paraclinical tests was still low while outpatient prescribing indicators were good compared to the World Health Organization's guidelines, especially the rate of antibiotic prescribing was very low. The survey of outpatient drug prescribing played a useful role to guide further in-depth studies on drug use analysis for outpatients in the future at Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital.
