Abstract

Objective: To describe the perceptions and practices of nurses in the intensive care unit in the assessment of delirium; to describe factors related to the perception and practice of delirium assessment of nurses. Subject and method: A cross-sectional study was used in 95 nurses working in intensive care units of the Vinmec health system from 15/02/2022 to 15/04/2022. Result: 61% of nurses assessed the presence of delirium, 70% of nurses had never heard or never used any delirium assessment tool. The total score of nurses' perception of delirium was 17.65 ± 4.89, higher than the mean score of the questionnaire. There was no association between nursing awareness and practice regrading delirium assessment; however, 36% nurses perceived that the delirium assessment tool is too complex to use in daily routine. Conclusion: Nurses ICU have a relatively good awareness of delirium but do not practice well in assessing delirium and using diagnostic tools for delirium. The factors influencing to these perception and behaviour are strongly related to the lack of knowledge.
