Correlation between Oswestry disability index and clinical characteristics, magnetic resonance imaging in patients with degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis

Abstract

Objective: To assess the degree of restriction of lumbar spine function in patients with spinal stenosis through the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and to study the association between severity of ODI and clinical characteristics, magnetic resonance imaging. Subject and method: 40 patients were diagnosed and treated for degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis at the Department of Neurosurgery, Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, from June 2021 to November 2021, with the method have cross-sectional descriptive study. Result: The mean ODI score was 50.16 ± 17.43, with the majority of patients at grade 3 (40.5%), grade 4 (27%), and grade 2 (24.3%). The mean ODI score in the group of patients with symptoms of spinal syndrome and neural root compression syndrome was higher than that in the non-symptoms group (p<0.05). However, as the degree of spinal stenosis increased, the ODI score also increased (p<0.05). The mean ODI score was associated with the degree of spinal stenosis. The cut-off was 50 on the ODI scale had a sensitivity (Se) of 79.2% and a specificity (Sp) of 68.8% to diagnose a patient's spinal stenosis. Conclusion: ODI scale should be used to assess the degree of spinal stenosis due to degeneration, especially in health facilities that do not have an MRI system.
