Evaluating the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in acute stroke patients by the PADUA prediction score

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in acute stroke patients by the PADUA prediction score. Subject and method: A descriptive, cross-sectional study on 218 acute stroke patients who were treated at the Stroke Department of 108 Military Central Hospital from October 2021 to April 2022. All patients, who met the inclusion criteria, were assessed the VTE risk by the PADUA prediction score. Result: 218 stroke patients were selected including cerebral hemorrhage (27.5%), acute ischemic stroke (65.6%) and subarachnoid hemorrhage (6.9%), the results showed that: Stroke patients had high risk factor for VTE (PADUA: 4.97 ± 2.2) and all 3 groups (cerebral hemorrhage, acute ischemic stroke and subarachnoid hemorrhage) had a high risk of VTE (PADUA scores were: 4.05 ± 1.72; 5.40 ± 2.493 and 4.53 ± 0.834, respectively). Some risk factors accounted for a high percentage that can be modified: Immobility (80.3%); acute infection (50.5%) and heart or respiratory failure (62.4%). Conclusion: Risk of VTE in acute stroke patients was high (by using PADUA prediction score).
