Abstract
Objective: To assess the awareness/knowledge of stroke risk factors and warning signs among caregivers of patients with or without stroke. Subject and method: A cross-sectional and comparative descriptive study was conducted at the Stroke Department and Some Others Departments of the 108 Military Central Hospital. The primary caregivers of stroke patients in group 1 and the caregivers of patients without stroke in group 2. Subjects were screened and data were collected using a participant information form and a Stroke Questionnaire Form. Warning signs and symptoms of stroke were compared between two groups of caregivers. SPSS 20.0 was used for data analysis. Result: Among the 200 respondents, 104 (52%) were in group 1 and 96 (48%) were in group 2. Group 1 had better cognition than group 2; in group 1 symptoms of hemiplegia 99 (95.2%) and numbness or weakness in the face 96 (92.3 %) were the two most common warning signs; shortness of breath was the least recognized symptom. Conclusion: Caregivers had a moderate knowledge of some of the warning signs and risk factors about stroke.
