Abstract

Objective: To describe the characteristics of knowledge, attitudes, and practice among caregivers of patients with schizophrenia during their hospitalization and its related factors. Subject and method: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 100 caregivers at Department of Psychiatry - Thai Nguyen National Hospital and Thai Nguyen provincial Psychiatry Hospital. Result: 52% of caregivers were female, and the average age was 37.2 ± 12.1. 60% of caregivers reported proper knowledge, 34% had proper skills and 60% had a proper attitude toward caring for patients with schizophrenia. Knowledge of caregivers had a negative relationship with age (r = -0.289, p=0.042), positive relationship with level of education (r = 0.582, p=0.000) and duration of caring (r = 0.533, p=0.000); skills of caregivers were positively correlated to level of education (r = 0.467, p=0.001) and duration of caring (r = 0.370, p=0.008). While the attitude of caregivers correlated positively to level of education (r = 0.533, p=0.000). Conclusion: The studied caregivers had proper knowledge and attitude but had poor caring skills. Knowledge, skills, and attitude had a positive relationship with the level of education and duration of caring; but knowledge had a negative relationship with age.
