The efficacy and safety of mechanical thrombectomy in acute basilar artery occlusion
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of mechanical thrombectomy in revascularization of patients with acute basilar artery occlusion (ABAO). Subject and method: This study included 22 patients with acute ischemic stroke attributable to ABAO treated within the first 12 hours after onset of symptoms. The clinical outcome and mortality rate were assessed 180 days after treatment. Result: The mean ± SD age of the patients was 66.14 ± 14.37 years (range: 29 - 86 years), the mean NIHSS on admission was 21.86 ± 9.05 (range: 2 - 35) and the mean GCS was 10.36 ± 3.58 (range: 5 - 15). None patients simultaneously received intravenous thrombolysis. A favorable outcome, defined as a modified Rankin Score (mRS) of 0 - 2 was observed in 31.8% of patients (7/22). Overall mortality rate was 40.9% (9/22). No symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhages and no procedure-related complications occurred. Conclusion: Mechanical thrombectomy with the stent retriever device can rapidly and improve functional outcome in patients with ABAO and these strategies have a low incidence of complications.
