The soft tissue of hand defects, the posterior interosseous flap

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate preliminary results of using the posterior interosseous flap in the soft tissue reconstruction of hand defects at 108 Military Central Hospital. Subject and method: From January 2016 to February 2023, 10 flaps were used in the reconstruction of soft tissue defects in hand for 10 patients at the Department of Traumatology - Orthopedic. There were 07 males and 03 females, with an average age of 38 (range 19 to 56) years. The average follow-up time was 32 months. The clinical outcome was assessed by a Self-Designed Tool based on flap survival, coverage of defect, functional activities of daily living. Data were analyzed through SPSS version 20.0. Result: Flaps survived in all cases. All patients had satisfactory functional outcomes without significant morbidity of the donor site. Slight to moderate venous congestion was observed in the three irst patients of this series, but this did not affect the inal outcome. Conclusion: The posterior interosseous flap provided coverage to almost all of the hand defects with a cosmetically and functional acceptable donor and recipient site
