Abstract

Objective: To describe health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in outpatients with chronic liver disease (CLD) using EQ-5D-5L/EQ-VAS at 108 Military Central Hospital in 2025, and to present demographic and clinical characteristics (sociodemographic, etiology, comorbidities, MELD score). Subject and method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 251 CLD outpatients. EQ-5D-5L and the visual analog scale (VAS) for health status, validated for the Vietnamese population, were used to assess HRQoL across five domains (mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort, anxiety/depression).
Result: EQ-5D-5L and VAS scores were generally high. The mean EQ-5D-5L index was 0.8478 (SD 0.2122) and mean EQ-VAS was 80.8 (SD 14.9). More than 50% of patients reported anxiety/depression of at least mild level, and ~45% reported pain/discomfort. Male patients accounted for 73.3%. Age distribution: 45 - 59 years (42.2%) and ≥60 years (33.1%) (n = 251). MELD < 11 was seen in 97.6% (mild disease stage). Etiologies included hepatitis B (78.5%), hepatitis C (10.4%), hepatocellular carcinoma (31.1%), and cirrhosis (25.5%). Conclusion: In this outpatient population, predominantly at mild disease stage, HRQoL remained relatively good. However, psychological burden and pain/discomfort were still substantial, suggesting a need to prioritize pain management and psychosocial support in outpatient care.
