Factors related to quality of life in older patients with chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer at National Geriatrics Hospital

Abstract

Objective: To explore some factors related to quality of life in the elderly with chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer. Subject and method: A cross-sectional study was performed in 108 patients aged 60 years or older, who was examined and treated at the National Geriatric Hospital. Subjects were interviewed by the unified medical record, their quality of life was assessed using SF-36 questionnaire. Result: The proportion of poor quality of life in the aspect of mental health, physical health and general quality of life in patients aged ≥ 70 years, male, living in rural areas were significantly higher than those in patients aged 60 - 69 years old, female, living in urban areas (p<0.05). The proportion of poor quality of life in the fields of mental health, physical health and general quality of life in patients with duration of gastritis/peptic ulcer ≥ 1 year, had clinical symptoms and image of peptic ulcer on endoscopic results were significantly higher than those in patients with diseases’ duration < 1 year, had no clinical symptoms and image of chronic gastritis on endoscopic results (p<0.05). Conclusion: The proportion of patients with poor quality of life associated with mental, physical health and overall were 48.1%, 49.1% and 38%, respectively. Age ≥ 70 years, male, living in rural areas, duration of chronic gastritis/peptic ulcer lasts ≥ 1 year, clinical symptoms, image of peptic ulcer on endoscopic results reduced quality of life in elderly patients.
