Abstract
Despite the many difficuties and challenges in 2020 for the Vietnam and World health sector when confronting COVID-19 pandemic with a large scale and complicated escalation, Vietnamese scientists still put immense efforts in order to conquer the world’s medical achievements, highly appreciated by the national expertise and the international community. Typically the world’s first single-limb transplant from living donor and the first double-forearms transplant in the Southeast Asia which were two complicated tranplant surgeries conducted by medical staffs of the 108 Military Central Hospital. Vietnam News Agency voted the former is one of the 10 outstanding events in Vietnam in 2020. Up to now, the hospital has successfully implemented 7/12 tissue, organs transplants (lungs, liver, kidneys, corneas, marrow, stem cells, shelters), kidney, liver, marrow transplantation have been conducted routinely (78 kidney transplant cases, 70 liver transplant cases, 03 lung transplants, 18 corneal transplants, 62 stem cell transplants, 40 cases bone marrow transplantation, 02 hand transplants). The transplanted-organs shows normal functions, bringing many scientific values and profound human values.
The future orientation of the hospital is to continue to develop human tissue and organs transplantation, particularly complicated organs such as face, uterus and intestines transplants. Creating biological tissue sources and replacement materials (3D bioprinting for organ regeneration), artificial organs, and controlling the rejection problem, the application of IT and AI in the human body tissue transplant is also the priority of the hospital in the coming time. In addition, it is needful to strengthen the coordination of organ transplants and build campaigns to promote and reward organ donors.
This article aims to summarize the major achievements of implementing human tissue and organs transplant at 108 Military Central Hospital in the period 2016-2021, which is the first stage of the scientific project named “Enhancement of research capacity to develop human tissue and organs transplantation at 108 Military Central Hospital” and also reveals the future orientation of developing human tissue and organs transplantation.
