Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the results of reconstruction of thumb amputation preserving thenar muscles by trimmed great and second toe transfers and the donor site morbidity following the surgery. Subject and method: A retrospective study. 39 thumb amputations preserving thenar muscles were reconstructed by 16 trimmed great toe and 23 second toe transfers from January 2011 to December 2019. The average following-up time was 31 months (12 - 92 months). Result: Age average was 29.6; male/female rate was 33/6. Primary results (n = 39): The survival rate was 97.4%; partial necrosis was 2.6%. Secondary results (n = 38): The average Kapandji score was 8.3/10; the average of grip and pinch strength were 83.8% and 59.4% of uninjured side, respectively. The average of static 2 points discrimination was 13.4mm; 38.5% had tendon adhesion complications. The foot morbidity was negligible with an average foot and ankle disability index score of 98.0/100. Conclusion: Reconstruction of thump amputation preserving thenar muscles by trimmed great toe and second toe transfers was safe, achieved good outcomes in motion and sensory restoration, did not leave much morbidity on the donor foot.
