Abstract

Objective: To evaluate clinical characteristics and results of micro-marsupialization technique for mucocele and ranula. Subject and method: A study of 30 mucocele or ranula patients who were treated from August 2019 to March 2020 at Hanoi Medical University Hosptial. Result: Most patients was female (63%); range 10 - 30 was 57.1. There was no risk factor accounted for 60%. 70% of patients had asymptomatic swelling, 86.67% of patients had discomfort when eating. The median size of mucocele was 10.47 ± 2.01mm (range: 7 - 15mm). The median size of ranula was 23 ± 5.07mm (range: 18 - 35mm). The median procedure time was 4.6 ± 1.2 minutes. The 1 week-outcome: 0% infected patient; 40% patients with mild pain and 53.33% patients with no pain. The rate of mild swelling was 86.67%. The 1 month-outcome: Most of patients had no swelling accounting for 80%; 63.33% patients presented full regression 1 month after treatment. The 3 months-outcome: 86.67% patients had full regression; 83.33% patients had normally function of eating. Conlusion: Mucocele and ranula of the oral cavity are common, unknown etiology, and both treated with micro-marsupialization with good outcome, safety, and simple technique.
