Abstract

Objective: To investigate the relationship between liver disease and blood transfusion in thalassemia patients in Nghe An Hematology - Blood Transfusion Center. Subject and method: A cross-sectional description study was conducted on 150 patients diagnosed with thalassemia by hemoglobin electrophoresis and/or molecular tests for specifically identifying damage genes at Nghe An Hematology - Blood Transfusion Center from April 2018 to October 2018. Result and conclusion: The proportion of patients with hepatomegaly, HCV infection gradually increased with groups of increasing blood transfusion units and the rate of HBV infection remains unchanged in blood transfusion groups. The ratio of fibrinogen decreased with the number of units of blood transfused but there was no significant difference between groups. Prolonged APTT time increased with the number of transmitted blood units. PT% below normal level higher in group with blood transfusion > 200 units (88.9%). AST, ALT, total bilirubin, indirect bilirubin increased gradually according to the number of transmitted blood units in those patients. Ferritin level was high in thalassemia patients and much higher in patients with high AST and ALT comparing with normal AST and ALT patients.
