Abstract

Objective: To evaluate of nutritional status in exacerbation of COPD patients and the relationship between nutritional status with some clinical, paraclinical characteristics and the outcome of patients. Subject and method: A descriptive cross-sectional study, 90 patients with exacerbation of COPD who treated in Department of Respiratory Medicine, 108 Military Central Hospital from October 2019 to June 2020, with clinical examination, BMI evaluation, concentration test protein and albumine levels in plasma. Result: The mean of age was 75.04 years old, mean of weight was 54.61 kilograms, the BMI lower than 18.5kg/m2 was 31.48%, BMI from 18.5 to 22.9kg/m2 was 48.15% and BMI from 23 to 24.9kg/m2 was 12.96%, while BMI higher than 25kg/m2 at 7.41%. The mean of albumine concentration was 32.4g/l. Patients who have poor nutrition increased the risk of occurrence on 2 exacerbations of COPD by 8.7 times compared to patients with good nutrition (p<0.05), and there was a relationship between poor nutrition and the proportion of patients with respiratory failure during exacerbations (p=0.041). No association was found between nutritional status and mortality and duration of treatment (p>0.05). Conclusion: The percentage of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who have poor nutrition was 38.9%. There was the relationship between nutritional status and the frequency of exacerbations of the disease and the ratio of patients with respiratory failure.
