Characteristics of hypoglycemia and related factors in older patients with type 2 diabetes treated at Thanh Nhan Hospital

Abstract

Objective: To explore characteristics of hypoglycemia and related factors in the elderly with type 2 diabetes treated at Thanh Nhan Hospital. Subject and method: A cross-sectional study on 1215 diabetic patients treated at Thanh Nhan Hospital from November 2018 to May 2019. Subjects were interviewed according to a uniform medical record. Hypoglycemia was diagnosed according to the ADA 2017 criteria: Blood glucose ≤ 3.9mmol/l. Result: The percentage of patients with at least 1 episode of hypoglycemia in the last 6 months was 47.1%. Mild and morderate levels of hypoglycemia accounts for 44.2%, severe hypoglycemia accounts for 2.9%. The longer the duration of diabetes, the treatment of insulin, sulfonylureas or kidney failure significantly increased the rate of hypoglycemia in this population (p<0.05). Age, gender, BMI, HbA1c level were related to hypoglycemia (p>0.05). Conclusion: The rate of hypoglycemia in elderly diabetic patients was quite high in Thanh Nhan Hospital. The longer the duration of diabetes, the treatment of insulin, sulfonylureas or chronic kidney disease stage 3, 4, 5 had higher incidence of hypoglycemia in this population.
