Abstract

Objective: To evaluate Interleukin (IL)-6 in prediction cirrhosis and its severity. Subject and method: A prospective, cross-sectional descriptive study carried out on 60 patients with cirrhosis and 30 control healthy subjects in Digestive Department of 103 Military Hospital. IL-6 concentration in plasma was determined by Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay (ELISA). Result: Median plasma IL-6 levels in patients with cirrhosis was 7.79pg/mL, significantly higher than that in control group (6.68pg/mL), p<0.001. IL-6 predicted cirrhosis with AUC of 0.85 (95% CI: 0.76 - 0.93). Serum IL-6 levels were significantly positive correlated to Child-Pugh score (r = 0.34, p=0.009). At the cut-off value of 7.46pg/mL, IL-6 had 91.7% sensitivity, 45.8% specificity for predicting Child-Pugh B/C cirrhosis. Conclusion: The serum IL-6 was a useful biomarker in detection of cirrhosis and its severity according to Child-Pugh classification
