Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the initial results of thoracoscopic surgical decortication in treating phase II empyema, for the experience and an extension of indication of thoracoscopic surgical decortication. Subject and method: We retrospectively enrolled 118 patients treated at the Department of Thoracic Surgery - 108 Military Central Hospital, diagnosed phase II empyema from 1/2014 to 7/2017. Result: A total of 118 patients with mean age of 73.6 ± 7.1 years received video-assisted thoracoscopic surgical decortication (VATSD) for their empyema. The vast majority (66.9%) of patients were male. The main symptoms were chest pain and fever. The patients were diagnosed by CT scan. The median hospital stay was 14.53 days. The patients had a low complication rate (3.2%) with bleeding (1.6%) and persistent air leak (1.6%). Conclusion: We concluded that VATS decortication in the treatment of thoracic empyema was effective in patients in phase II.
