Abstract

Objective: To compare the side effects of ultrasound-guided continuous femoral nerve block and single shot sciatic nerve block versus continuous epidural analgesia for pain relief following the knee arthroscopy surgery. Subject and method: A randomized controlled clinical trial, 60 patients with knee arthroscopy surgery were divided into 2 groups: Group 1 received epidural anesthesia, group 2 received continuous femoral nerve blockade and single shot sciatic nerve block for postoperative anesthesia. Result: The side effects of continuous femoral nerve block and single shot sciatic nerve block compared with epidural anesthesia were: Nausea 3.3% vs. 20%; retention urine 0% vs. 16.7%, foot numbness 3.3% compared with 23.3%. Conclusion: Ultrasound-guided continuous femoral nerve block and single shot sciatic nerve block have less side effects than epidural anesthesia following postoperative pain relief of knee arthroscopy surgery.
