Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the change of red cell morphology in peripheral blood in cirrhotic patients and its relationship with liver dysfunction. Subject and method: Prospective, cross-sectional descriptive study carried out on 70 patients with cirrhosis in Digestive Department of 103 Military Hospital. The determination of presence of spur cell on peripheral blood smear at ×100 magnification under oil immersion. Result: Prevalence of spur cell on peripheral blood smear in cirrhotic patients was 44.3%. Patients with spur cells had more advanced liver disease higher Child-Pugh score (9.4 ± 2.2 vs 8.0 ± 1.9, p=0.006) and higher prevalence in Child-Pugh C cirrhosis compared with Child-Pugh B/A cirrhosis (70.8% vs 31.4% and 23.7%, respectively, p<0.05). Conclusion: The presence of spur cell was quite common in patients with cirrhosis and had the correlation with liver dysfunction.
