Abstract

Summary


Objective: To describe clinical and subclinical aspects of allergic rhinitis caused by cotton dust allergen of workers in two military garment factories. Subject and method: A cross-sectional description study on 1812 workers of two military garment factories. Discovering allergy history based on Sample 25b of WHO, classifying functional symptoms and body level by Total Nasal Symptom Score (TNSS). Perform skin prick test, determine the total serum IgE and IgA concentration of the patients. Result: 10.76% of workers exposed to cotton dust suffer from allergic rhinitis. These patients had 4 main functional symptoms: Itchy nose (42.6% moderate and 47.2% mild), sneezing (33.8% moderate and 36.4% slight); runny nose (39.0% moderate and 47.7% mild); nasal congestion (50.3% moderate and 27.7% mild). The majority of patients with allergic rhinitis due to cotton dust suffer from nasal mucosa inflammation (48.1% severe and 28.8% moderate). 70% of patients had inferior turbinate hypertrophy (53.3% mild and 21% moderate). All patients take skin prick testing with positive results, mostly at level 2 (+) and 3 (+). The total serum IgE concentration of patients was high, median 1227.756UI/mL (575.424UI/mL - 38008.333UI/mL). On the contrary, the patient's total serum IgA level was low, median 61.509mg/dL (26.773mg/dL - 211.826mg/dL). Conclusion: Patients with allergic rhinitis caused by cotton dust allergen have symptoms similar to those with this disease in general. Most patients have 4 functional symptoms, 2 symptoms of nasal mucosa and inferior turbinate, all with positive skin prick test (+) and high level of IgE, low level of IgA.
