Abstract
Background: Molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) may persist into adulthood and pose challenges for diagnosis and treatment. Objective: To determine the prevalence, describe the clinical characteristics, and assess the treatment needs of MIH among students at Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 1,176 students. Result: The prevalence of MIH was 10.9%, with most cases classified as moderate to severe (81.3%). Among 217 teeth affected by MIH, first permanent molars accounted for 83.4%; enamel defects in this tooth group were more frequently yellow/brown and more extensive than those in incisors (p<0.001). Treatment needs increased with lesion severity, ranging from preventive care in mild cases to complex restorative treatment in severe cases. Conclusion: The prevalence of MIH among students was 10.9%, with most cases being moderate to severe. Lesions were predominantly concentrated in first permanent molars, and treatment needs increased with lesion severity.
