Patch augmentation in the repair of large rotator cuff tears - preliminary clinical outcomes

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the preliminary clinical outcomes of patch-augmented rotator cuff repair for the treatment of large rotator cuff tears at Saigon ITO Phu Nhuan Hospital. Subject and method: A retrospective case-series study was conducted on patients with large rotator cuff tears treated with arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and patch augmentation. Clinical outcomes were assessed at four time points: preoperatively (L1), 3 months postoperatively (L2), 6 months postoperatively (L3), and at the latest postoperative follow-up (L4), with a minimum follow-up duration of 7 months. The Constant–Murley and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) shoulder scores were used to evaluate pain, shoulder function, and range of motion. Result: The study included 9 patients, consisting of 5 males and 4 females. The mean age was 63.78 ± 8.14 years, ranging from 55 to 81 years. The mean Constant-Murley score increased from 38.6 ± 10.8 before surgery to 77.3 ± 5.2 at the latest follow-up. The mean UCLA score improved from 10.7 ± 3.3 to 32.4 ± 1.8. After surgery, pain decreased, while shoulder range of motion and function gradually improved over the follow-up periods. At the final assessment, most patients achieved good-to-excellent UCLA outcomes at final follow-up. During follow-up, no major complications requiring reintervention were recorded. Conclusion: Rotator cuff repair with patch augmentation showed favorable initial clinical outcomes in patients with large rotator cuff tears. These findings suggest that patch-augmented rotator cuff repair is a feasible treatment option for selected patients with reparable large rotator cuff tears.
