Abstract
Objective: To evaluate changes in erectile function in patients undergoing transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Subjects and methods: A longitudinal study was conducted on 141 patients with confirmed benign prostatic hyperplasia who underwent TURP at Hanoi Medical University Hospital from January 2020 to December 2022. Erectile function was assessed using the IIEF-5 questionnaire preoperatively and at 3 and 6 months postoperatively. Result: The proportion of patients resuming sexual activity increased over time and reached 100% by the fourth postoperative month. Erectile dysfunction showed an increasing trend after surgery, with a large proportion of moderate and severe cases. The IIEF-5 score decreased significantly between preoperative and postoperative assessments, with no significant difference between 3 and 6 months postoperatively. The most affected domains were penile rigidity, maintenance of erection, and sexual satisfaction. Conclusion: The study observed a decline in erectile function following TURP, with an early decrease that remained stable over the 6-month follow-up period. Preoperative counseling and postoperative monitoring of sexual function are recommended to provide appropriate supportive management.
