Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the initial outcomes of implementing minimally invasive cardiac surgery at Military Hospital 103. Subject and method: A prospective descriptive study was conducted on patients undergoing minimally invasive cardiac surgery from April 2022 to October 2025. Clinical data, operative time, cardiopulmonary bypass, complications, length of hospital stay, and early postoperative outcomes were collected. Result: Fourteen patients underwent minimally invasive cardiac surgery, including mitral valve repair, mitral valve replacement, atrial septal defect closure, and atrial tumor resection. The surgical approach consisted of a right anterolateral thoracotomy through the fourth intercostal space. Peripheral cardiopulmonary bypass was established via the femoral artery-femoral vein and the internal jugular vein. The mean cardiopulmonary bypass time was 218.4 ± 41.3 minutes, and the mean aortic cross-clamp time was 141.7 ± 24.4 minutes. There were no early deaths and no recorded perioperative adverse events. The complication rate was low, with only one case requiring reoperation due to bleeding. The mean duration of mechanical ventilation was 6.4 ± 1.9 hours. The median intensive care unit stay was 1 day. Conclusion: The initial experience with minimally invasive cardiac surgery at Military Hospital 103 demonstrates that the technique is safe and feasible.
