Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to describe the prevalence of dysphagia and identify associated factors among elderly patients at the 108 Central Military Hospital (108 CMH) in Hanoi, Vietnam. Subject and method: A cross-sectional study was conducted between February and June 2024, involving 200 conveniently sampled patients aged ≥ 60 years admitted to Departments A1A and A1C. Dysphagia was screened using the 30ml Water Swallow Test (WST). Data on demographics and medical history were collected. Statistical analysis included descriptive statistics and logistic regression to identify factors associated with dysphagia (p<0.05). Result: The prevalence of dysphagia was 47% (94/200), with mild dysphagia being the most common, 91.49%. Logistic regression revealed that age ≥ 75 years (OR: 5.84, 95% CI: 3.03 - 11.32) and a history of hypertension (OR: 2.06, 95% CI: 1.09 - 3.91) were significantly associated with increased odds of dysphagia. Gender, diabetes, and prior stroke did not show significant associations. Conclusion: Dysphagia was highly prevalent among hospitalized elderly patients at 108 CMH. Advanced age and hypertension are significant associated factors.
