Prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection and associated factors among patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing maintenance hemodialysis

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) several factors associated with tuberculosis infection among patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). Subject and method: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 120 patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing maintenance hemodialysis at Military Hospital 103 from August 2023 to December 2025. Latent tuberculosis infection was diagnosed using the QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus assay. Result: The prevalence of LTBI among patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis was 27.5%. LTBI was significantly associated with male sex (OR: 2.701, 95% CI: 1.045 - 6.978), concomitant diabetes mellitus (OR: 5.968; 95% CI: 1.845 - 19.306), and viral hepatitis (HBV or HCV) (OR: 3.976, 95% CI: 1.348 - 11.727) in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. Conclusion: The prevalence of LTBI among patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing maintenance hemodialysis was 27.5%. Greater attention should be paid to LTBI screening in male patients with concomitant diabetes mellitus and viral hepatitis among patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis.
