Abstract

Background: Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) is a common condition among postmenopausal women, resulting from estrogen deficiency and affecting quality of life. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and characteristics of GSM among postmenopausal women. Objective: To assess the status of genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) in postmenopausal women attending Thai Nguyen A Hospital from January 1 to June 30, 2025. Subject and method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 568 postmenopausal women attending the outpatient department of Thai Nguyen A Hospital from January to June 2025 to assess the status of genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). Result: The mean age at menopause was 49.2 ± 3.8 years, with most participants (46.7%) having a menopause duration of 5 - 10 years. Nocturia (≥ 3 times per night) was the most prevalent urinary symptom (60.7%), followed by urinary frequency (38.7%). Decreased sexual desire was reported by 81.9% of participants, and 64.8% experienced difficulty achieving orgasm. Hypertension (55.6%) and diabetes (52.5%) were common comorbidities. Significant associations were observed between menopause duration and several GSM symptoms, including urinary urgency, nocturia, stress urinary incontinence, vaginal dryness, dyspareunia, and decreased sexual function (p<0.05). Conclusion: GSM is common among postmenopausal women and is significantly associated with the duration of menopause; early detection is essential to improve quality of life.
