Characteristics of co-occurring gene mutation in non-small cell lung cancer patient

Abstract
Objective: The aim of the study is to identify co-occurring gene alterations in patients with non-small cell lung cancer treated at Military Hospital 103. Subject and method: A prospective, cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 155 patients with non-small cell lung cancer who were treated at Military Hospital 103 from January 2023 to January 2025. Genomic alterations were analyzed from FFPE tissue samples using next-generation sequencing. Result: Next-generation sequencing identified gene alterations in 108 of 155 patients (69.7%). Co-occurring mutations were detected in 42.6% of patients, including 37 patients (34.3%) with two mutations and 9 patients (8.3%) with three or more mutations. EGFR mutations frequently occurred as co mutations (56.9%). The most common combination was EGFR plus BRAF in 9 patients, followed by compound EGFR mutations in 8 patients, and EGFR plus TP53 in 3 patients. Conclusion: Co-occurring gene alterations were identified in 42.6% of patients with non-small cell lung cancer, including 34.3% with two mutations and 8.3% with three or more mutations, particularly among those harboring common EGFR variants, including exon 19 deletions and exon 21 L858R.
