Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the five-year outcomes of hemiarthroplasty for femoral neck fractures in elderly patients. Subject and method: This was a retrospective longitudinal study without a control group. A total of 33 elderly patients with femoral neck fractures who underwent hemiarthroplasty at the Joint Surgery Department, Military Hospital 103 in 2019 and 2020 were included. Result: The mean age was 74.88 ± 8.67 years (range, 61–93), with a male-to-female ratio of 1/3.71. The Barthel Index scores at preoperative assessment, 1 year, and 5 years postoperatively were 96.21 ± 10.23 (60 - 100), 88.5 ± 18.01 (30 – 100), and 92.0 ± 11.29 (60 – 100), respectively. The postoperative complication rate was 15.15%. The 1-year and 5-year mortality rates were 9.1% and 39.4%, respectively. Mortality was significantly associated with ASA classification and postoperative complications, with p-values of 0.02 and 0.039, respectively. Conclusion: Hemiarthroplasty for femoral neck fractures in elderly patients resulted in a Barthel Index score of 92.0 ± 11.29 at 5 years postoperatively. The 5-year mortality rate was 39.4%, and mortality was significantly associated with ASA grade and postoperative complications.
