Abstract

To describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics in patients undergoing thoraco-laparoscopic esophagectomy for esophageal cancer at Hanoi Oncology Hospital. Subject and method: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted on 39 patients with esophageal cancer who underwent thoraco-laparoscopic esophagectomy at the Department of General Surgery, Hanoi Oncology Hospital, from January 2023 to December 2025. Result: The mean age was 56.9 ± 6.8 years, with the 60 - 69 age group accounting for the highest proportion (46.2%). The majority of patients were male (97.4%). Dysphagia was the most common presenting symptom (56.4%). Most patients had a normal body mass index (BMI) (89.7%). The proportions of patients with a history of alcohol consumption and smoking were high, at 79.5% and 82.0%, respectively. Most tumors were located in the lower third of the esophagus (74.4%). Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) was the predominant histological type (97.4%). The proportion of patients with early-stage disease who underwent upfront surgery was 30.8%. Neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy was administered in 66.7% of patients. Conclusion: Patients with esophageal cancer undergoing surgery at Hanoi Oncology Hospital were predominantly middle-aged men, commonly with a history of smoking and alcohol consumption, with dysphagia being the most frequent presenting symptom; tumors were mainly located in the lower third of the esophagus, the majority were histologically squamous cell carcinoma, and most patients were diagnosed at a locally advanced stage.
