Correlation between peripheral blood blast percentage and selected blood cell parameters in adult patients with acute myeloid leukemia

Abstract
Objective: 1. To describe the characteristics of peripheral blood cells in adult patients with acute myeloid leukemia at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion. 2. To analyze the correlation between the peripheral blood blast percentage and several peripheral blood cell indices in adult AML patients at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion. Subject and method: A retrospective cross-sectional descriptive study based on medical record review. Result: The mean age was 54.95 ± 16.91 years. Anemia was observed in 96.5% of patients. Thrombocytopenia was present in 91.1% of patients, while 69% had leukocytosis. The presence of blast cells was very high, with 98.8% of patients having them. Regarding correlations between peripheral blood blast percentage and several hematological indices: A statistically significant moderate positive correlation was observed with white blood cell count (r = 0.433, p<0.001); a statistically significant weak negative correlation was found with platelet count (r = -0.195, p<0.05); and a very weak negative correlation without statistical significance was observed with hemoglobin level (r = -0.083, p>0.05). Conclusion: The peripheral blood blast percentage showed a statistically significant moderate positive correlation with white blood cell count and a statistically significant weak negative correlation with platelet count.
