Abstract

Objective: To characterize the clinical features of large anterior chest-wall defects arising from causes such as burns, radiotherapy, and malignant ulceration in a cohort of 30 patients. Subject and method: Descriptive study of 30 patients presenting with anterior chest-wall defects secondary to burns, malignant transformation of chronic ulcer or post-radiotherapy changes, managed at the National Burn Hospital Le Huu Trac and the 108 Military Central Hospital from September 2020 to December 2025. Result: Thirty patients (male/female ratio 7/23) with a mean age of 55.83 ±15.186 years were included. The most common etiologies were post-cancer treatment sequelae, malignant ulceration of scars, and burn-related injuries. All patients (100%) had anterior chest-wall defects with a mean area of 50.17 ± 41.78cm²; the depth typically involved chest-wall structures. Two of 30 cases had intrathoracic visceral involvement. The mean interval from the onset of tissue loss to reconstruction was 8.8 ± 6.9 months. Conclusions: Extensive chest-wall defects stem from diverse etiologies tumor extirpation, infection, burns, or trauma but are. Most frequently encountered as sequelae of radiotherapy for malignant disease, particularly breast cancer in women. Defining these characteristics provides a foundation for standardized reconstructive planning and underscores the need for multidisciplinary evaluation and timely intervention to mitigate complications.
