Abstract

This study investigated the prevalence and associated factors of preoperative anxiety among patients undergoing surgical or medical procedures at the emergency departments of hospitals within the Vinmec Healthcare System from December 2024 to June 2025. Objective: To describe the current status of preoperative anxiety among patients at emergency departments and identify related factors. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted involving 97 preoperative patients who completed standardized preoperative anxiety assessment questionnaires. Results: The findings revealed that 14.4% of patients experienced clinically significant anxiety, while 2.2% exhibited symptoms of anxiety. Patients with chronic illnesses had a higher prevalence of anxiety (28.6%) compared to those without chronic conditions (11.6%), with a statistically significant difference (OR = 3.10; 95% CI: 0.11 - 0.99; p<0.05). Conclusion: It is necessary to implement supportive measures, including the provision of preoperative information and psychological interventions, to alleviate anxiety in patients prior to surgery.
