Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to determine and evaluate plasma levels of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 in patients with hypopharyngeal and laryngeal cancers compared with control groups. Subject and method: A prospective, cross-sectional, controlled study with longitudinal follow-up was conducted on 184 cancer patients (57 hypopharyngeal cancer, 127 laryngeal cancer), 58 disease controls (patients with other laryngeal conditions such as inflammation or fibrosis), and 50 healthy controls. Result: The median MMP-2 concentration was lower in the patient group (7.00ng/mL) and higher in the healthy control group (8.77ng/mL), with a statistically significant difference. Among males, MMP-2 levels varied significantly across groups, whereas no notable differences were observed among females; specifically, male healthy controls had higher levels than females (p=0.0079). TIMP-2 levels were lowest in the patient group (61.11ng/mL) and highest in the control group (75.48ng/mL), with overall levels being higher in females than in males, a statistically significant difference across the entire sample (p=0.0005). Conclusion: Plasma MMP-2 and TIMP-2 levels were decreased in patients with hypopharyngeal and laryngeal cancers compared with controls, suggesting their potential role as supportive biomarkers for diagnosis.
