Morphological study of the scapula in Vietnamese adults

Abstract

Objective: Determine the anatomical characteristics of scapula in Vietnamese adults. Subject and method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 80 patients who treated at Military Hospital 103 from Dec. 2023 to Jan. 2024. The CT-3D scans were achieved. The comparison between morphological parameters of scapula with respect to age, sex, and laterality were performed. Result: The mean of the length, the width and the spine length of scapular were 141.09 ± 8.40mm, 111.40 ± 9.65mm, and 131.23 ± 7.90mm, respectively. The glenoid cavity measured 33.85 ± 2.79 mm in height and 26.18 ± 2.12mm in width, with a mean neck angle of 39.94° ± 3.49. Age group based analysis revealed that individuals aged 41 - 60 years had wider scapulae, whereas those aged 18 - 40 years presented with longer spines and higher glenoid cavities (p<0.01). Male subjects demonstrated significantly larger measurements than females, particularly in scapular length, spine length, and glenoid dimensions (p<0.001). No significant differences were observed between right and left scapulae (p>0.05). Conclusion: This study provides baseline morphometric data of the scapula in the adult Vietnamese population.
