Abstract
Objective: (1) To describe the characteristics of unplanned removal of peripheral intravenous infusion catheters in patients at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital in 2025; (2) To determine factors related to unplanned removal of peripheral intravenous infusion catheters in patients at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital in 2025. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 271 inpatients with intravenous infusion catheters from February 2025 to May 2025 at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital. Results: the rate of unplanned catheter removal was 33.9%. There were 4 factors associated with unplanned catheter removal, including catheter size OR 2.034 and 95% CI 1.019–4.601; p = 0.027; position of tape fixing across the butterfly OR 0.250 and 95% CI 0.076–0.829; p = 0.023; position of tape fixing U-shaped tape along the catheter shaft OR 2.260 và 95% CI: 1.008 –5.07; p = 0.04, position of tape fixing the infusion line to the patient's skin OR 2.291 and 95% CI 1.11–5.12; p = 0.025. The study helps nurses apply clinically how to choose the appropriate catheter size and catheter fixation.
