Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the knowledge and practices of postpartum women regarding skin-to-skin contact and early breastfeeding after normal delivery at the 108 Military Central Hospital. Subject and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 180 postpartum women after normal delivery at the Department of Obstetrics, 108 Military Central Hospital, from August to September 2025. Result: The mean age of the participants was 28.3 ± 4.2 years, with the majority aged 25-34 years (69.4%). Most of the participants were government employees (53.8%) and held a university or postgraduate degree (57.3%). Regarding knowledge, 91.7% of the mothers knew that keeping the baby warm after birth is essential, and 78.9% were aware of the skin-to-skin contact method. However, only 64% actually practiced skin-to-skin contact. Concerning early breastfeeding, 90.6% knew that the appropriate time to initiate breastfeeding is within the first hour after birth, and 73.9% had practiced it. Regarding knowledge of colostrum, 74.5% had heard about it, and 98.3% understood that colostrum contains many antibodies, but only 27.2% knew all of its benefits. Conclusion: Postpartum women’s knowledge of skin-to-skin contact and early breastfeeding was relatively good; however, their actual practices remained limited. Strengthening counseling, guidance, and direct support for mothers during the first hour after delivery is necessary to improve the practice of these essential newborn care measures and contribute to better neonatal health outcomes.
