Abstract

Objective: To review the theoretical basis, technical principles, and clinical application of absolute ethanol embolization–sclerotherapy in the treatment of simple peripheral vascular malformations.

Methods: International literature related to lesion classification, indications, access routes, ethanol dosage, complication control, and imaging guidance was systematically collected, synthesized, and analyzed. Technical procedures, safety principles, and practical clinical experience were reviewed to identify key factors contributing to effective and safe implementation.

Results: When performed according to standardized protocols and under appropriate imaging guidance, absolute ethanol demonstrates strong sclerosant effects, leading to effective lesion obliteration, symptom improvement, and reduced recurrence rates. However, procedure-related complications may occur if technical principles and safety measures are not strictly adhered to.

Conclusion: Absolute ethanol embolization–sclerotherapy is an effective treatment option for simple peripheral vascular malformations. Standardization of technical protocols and the implementation of multicenter clinical studies are essential to further optimize treatment outcomes and enhance patient safety in clinical practice.
