Relationship between ultrasound-measured optic nerve sheath diameter and mortality in sepsis patients

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the prognostic value of the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) measured by bedside ultrasound in predicting mortality in patients with sepsis. Subject and method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 70 patients with sepsis admitted to the intensive care unit. All patients underwent ONSD measurement using bedside ultrasound within the first 24 hours of admission. Clinical and paraclinical data, as well as survival status, were collected and analyzed. The prognostic value of ONSD for mortality was assessed using the ROC curve. Result: The mean ONSD in the deceased group was significantly higher compared to the survivors (5.64 ± 0.62mm vs. 5.25 ± 0.55mm, p<0.05). ROC analysis showed that ONSD had a prognostic value for mortality with an AUC of 0.71. The cutoff value of 5.35mm had a sensitivity of 64% and specificity of 80%. ONSD was identified as an independent predictor of mortality in septic patients. Conclusion: Bedside ultrasound measurement of ONSD is a non-invasive and valuable tool in predicting mortality in patients with sepsis.
