Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the level of knowledge and medication-taking behavior related to oral anticoagulants among outpatients at Hanoi Heart Hospital. Subject and method: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Hanoi Heart Hospital, Facility 1, from December 2022 to February 2023. Eligible participants were outpatients receiving oral anticoagulants who provided informed consent. Data were collected through direct interviews on medical history, medication adherence, and knowledge regarding anticoagulant therapy. Knowledge was assessed using a validated Vietnamese version of the Anticoagulant Knowledge Tool (AKT). Adherence was measured by Proportion of Days Covered (PDC), with good adherence defined as PDC ≥ 80%. Result: A total of 153 patients were enrolled; nearly 60% were younger than 65 years and about 70% had an educational level of junior high school or lower, including illiterate participants. Data were collected through direct interviews, and anticoagulant knowledge was measured using the validated Vietnamese version of the Anticoagulant Knowledge Tool (AKT). Medication adherence was assessed by adjusted Proportion of Days Covered (PDC), with good adherence defined as PDC ≥ 80%. Overall, 93.5% of patients demonstrated good adherence, with higher adherence observed in those using vitamin K antagonists (VKA) compared to direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC). While patients generally showed adequate knowledge regarding daily medication use and perioperative precautions, their understanding of VKA and adverse events was limited. A statistically significant association was found between anticoagulant knowledge and treatment adherence (p<0.05). Conclusion: Knowledge and medication-taking behavior regarding oral anticoagulant therapy among outpatients at Hanoi Heart Hospital remain suboptimal and require further improvement to enhance therapeutic outcomes and minimize adverse events.
